Project Objectives
In this initiative, our primary goals were twofold:
-
Conducting comprehensive research on the challenges encountered by migrant workers in Singapore.
-
Exploring the potential of technology in addressing some of these challenges.
Research Methodology
To achieve our objectives, we employed a multifaceted research approach:
-
Conducted street interviews with six distinct groups of migrant workers.
-
Engaged in interviews with various NGOs, government agencies, and a construction company.
-
Gathered insights from teams involved in prior solutions, including dormitory projects.
Identified Challenges
Our research unveiled several significant challenges faced by migrant workers:
-
Inadequate sleep, averaging only 5 hours per night.
-
Subpar quality of catered food.
-
Unsafe transportation conditions on lorries.
-
Lack of crucial information, including:
-
High fees paid to agents for job placement in Singapore.
-
Deceptive practices by agents regarding job nature.
-
Limited understanding of the complete job-finding process in Singapore.
-
-
Power imbalances arising from debt and restricted job mobility.
Exploration of Solutions
Our exploration involved collaborative discussions with stakeholders, leading to the consideration of various solutions:
-
Development of an information portal for both migrant workers and companies.
-
Creation of a review portal to enable feedback from migrant workers and companies.
-
Implementation of a job matching portal for streamlined employment connections.
-
Design of an educational "game" providing insights into potential red flags in the journey to Singapore.
