Generate personalised learning materials in minutes

https://go.gov.sg/sheetfighter
Problem
Primary school English Language (EL) teachers struggle to provide tailored support for students with diverse learning needs, especially weaker students:
Standard materials often prove too difficult for struggling students
Too tedious and time-consuming to create customised learning materials
Lack of material for targeted practice for weaker areas
Lack of engaging material to motivate students to practise
Consequences
Teachers often reuse or recycle old materials, which may not adequately support individual learning paces
Weaker students fall behind, particularly in composition writing, comprehension, and higher-order thinking skills
Without intervention, their confidence falls as the gap widens
"Customising worksheets to align with different student ability levels takes a lot of effort, but I have to do it because weaker students won’t cope otherwise.”
— P4 English Teacher

Question:
From paragraphs 1 to 5, identify three words or phrases that show Sarah's different emotional states before, during, and after the tournament. For each word or phrase, explain what emotion it reveals about Sarah.
Recommended Approach:
First, identify what the question is asking for:
Need to find three different emotional states
Must be from different points in time (before, during, and after)
Must explain what each reveals about Sarah's emotions
Scan the passage chronologically:
Before tournament: Paragraph 3 shows pre-tournament nerves
During tournament: Paragraphs 4 shows tension during matches
After tournament: Paragraph 5 shows final moment and realisation
Look for specific words/phrases that:
Show rather than tell emotions
Represent different stages of the tournament
Demonstrate clear emotional states
Model Answer:
Before: "hands trembled" - This shows that Sarah was nervous and anxious before the tournament began.
During: "nerve-wracking semi-final" - This reveals that Sarah was feeling tense and under pressure during the matches.
After: "made a bold decision" - This shows that Sarah had grown confident and brave enough to take risks by the end of the tournament.
Common mistakes to watch for:
Simply listing emotions without supporting phrases
Using phrases that don't clearly indicate emotions
Using multiple phrases from the same stage of the tournament
Not explaining how the phrase reveals the emotion

Impact
We tested SheetFighter with a primary school cluster, including Seng Kang, North Vista, Rivervale and Palm View Primary Schools, to understand its impact and usability. Teachers across different student profiles, from high-ability learners to those struggling with comprehension, provided valuable feedback on its effectiveness.
Time savings
"Teachers do welcome as much material as possible, but the real challenge is the time it takes to construct them. If AI can generate quality worksheets in minutes, that’s a huge win for us."
Customisation matters
"Some of my students are weak in comprehension, while others need to be pushed further. If we can easily adjust the passage difficulty and question type, that would be a game-changer."
Engagement potential
"Students engage more when they actually care about the content. If AI-generated passages can be adapted to their interests, we might see them more willing to read and practise."
Formatting is crucial
"Honestly, the content creation is meaningful work, but formatting is a nightmare—line numbers, margins, visual texts—it all takes up time. AI should handle that automatically."
Beyond the hackathon
We will work closely with pilot schools to refine the tool’s features and improve the quality of worksheets based on direct feedback from teachers and students.
Key areas of focus include:
Expanding content coverage:
Comprehension Cloze
Synthesis and Transformation
Enhancing functionality:
Integration with Student Learning Space (SLS) to enable students to access and complete generated exercises digitally
Auto-grading
Scaling beyond Primary 5 English by extending the tool’s capabilities to other academic levels and subjects.
